Outline and Introduction

Loads (forces) on structures are classified on the basis of how they are applied to the structure (the type of load) and what their cause is (the class of load). Values have to be selected for the magnitude of these loads. How do we do that?

After working through this unit and watching the online videos and attending the associated workshops and practical classes you should be able to:

• classify loads by type and class
• calculate values for dead and live loads
• Understand the limit state basis of structural design
